Surviving vs Thriving - Don't Sacrifice Your Heart
The world is largely in survival mode. We all see it. We all deal with it the best we can, some days better than others. This past year has been filled with “How could that have happened?", waves of reactivity. The end-of-year-holiday period is upon us in the Western world, and the prevailing mindset of this time is actually depression. Recognizing that helps to diffuse its energies. Retailing depends on it. Be a consumer! Buy this and feel better! They are literally banking on the fact that it has been a crunchy year energetically and that "Things haven’t gone the way I wanted them to” and variations on that scream prevail.
Survival mode turns us away from what will actually help us thrive and makes us focus on the wrong things. There is a saying that “the devil is in the details” and a truth of that statement is that the experience of “hell” happens when we focus our hearts on all of the details that we think we have to handle perfectly to survive and not on what really matters.
The crucial shift of this past year has been one of perceptual focus.
People go into survival mode for a lot of reasons. Finances might be tight or non-existent, we might be unable to feed our families, there might be a family situation that breaks our hearts, situations all over the world and in our own communities do that too… Take a moment and let your intuition, your deep core of consciousness, tell you what throws you into survival mode the fastest. On the surface you may think you know. Try this anyway.
What puts me into survival mode the fastest? Fill in the blank. It probably varies with circumstance.
Now ask that same deep strata of being what will put you into thriving mode and keep you there in the most optimal way? Reams of data show up? Paragraphs and pages from every self-improvement article or book you’ve ever read? Every teacher you’ve had? Every path you’ve followed? That is your mind trying to do the job you’ve given it, namely solving the problem. It can’t. You need your heart.
When we go into survival mode we lose our hearts. The mind will argue that this is not so. Try not to let it, just for this moment. Feel how it feels to push your nose further into that grindstone, to run harder up that hill, to go into auto-pilot and take the steps you ‘should’ take or ‘have to’ take by rote using only your determination and will. This is not to say that some or all of those actions are not necessary to move your life forward and that you don’t have to put heart into some of them… suspend that for a moment. Feel how it feels, how you feel, when you run on ‘the inevitable’. Now let it go.
There was an episode of Gray’s Anatomy I happened to see that posed three critical questions:
Do you know where you are?
Do you know what has happened to you?
Do you want to live this way?
The patient’s answers determined life or death.
Here are those questions re-formatted for you:
Do you know WHO you are?
(If not, ask the Infinite immediately if not sooner and LISTEN)
Do your actions support who you truly are and what you are here to create?
(Don’t sell yourself out, be honest)
Are you living the way that best supports your flow and creativity?
Your answers determine whether or not you are losing your heart (and thus leaking your light).
Let yourself observe what you are focusing and flowing your energies into that does not support who you truly are. When we choose to continue to live that way, Spirit flows out of us. It will leave, taking your heart along for the ride. You may not even notice you have ‘greyed-out’.
Apply what you heard from the Infinite and your Spirit.
You are a being of light, capable of creating anything. Choose what you would LOVE to be creating.
Make the choice, then the commitment, then set in motion the determination and discipline to make it so.
Ask the Infinite to take care of the hows.
Agree to show up when and as directed.
Stop listening to the inner and outer voices telling you all of the reasons why that is impossible.
Focus on your light. Focus on THE light. Let the Infinite (the universe, the Divine, whatever your name for this might be) flow through you and - wait for it - step fully into that current and let it sweep you along.
Or grab that ribbon of light and don’t let go no matter what. Let it pull you through. (It will not be through the brush backwards!)
Take actions every day, even just one and for one minute, that feed, that nurture, nourish, acknowledge, accept, support and cherish WHO you are and WHAT you are inspired to create.
Don’t ignore finances. When you do that they go away. Love them as a symbol of the flow within which you thrive. Let your financial needs and goals dive into that flow with you. Grab on and take the plunge. See what frees itself to come along. Acknowledge your needs and goals and let the Infinite show you the openings available from which to receive them.
Everyone’s openings have changed. Staring at a closed door avails nothing. Take the actions that show up.
Repeat from inspiration, rather than rote.
What will put you into Thriving mode? Following your light streams. These streams of light make themselves known first as a type of aspiration. "I aspire to…" creates a huge fork (with many tributaries) in your timelines, tracks and trajectories of energy. One branch (of these major arteries) leads from aspiration to inspiration, which is key for creating and living as the truth of what you are. The other way(s) lead(s) to losing heart.
I am observing hearts being lost along the way. It most often happens unconsciously, without observation, sometimes until it is too late. When we lose heart, we lose ourselves completely. We grey out. You can see it in the collective. You can feel it in the air and the waters. The slow wearing down of the heart into giving up when the solution is to give in… to what we truly are, rather than what we have tolerated as what is possible.
I am also observing a deeper strengthening of the heart. Deeper listening to what serves and what does not. A deeper acknowledgement of resonance.
Resonance is what determines destiny. Frequency, vibration, resonance, all create both harmony and dissonance. Resonance is the feeling we need to create our fresh fields of creation.
Do you know where you are? Do you know what has happened to you? Do you want to live that way?
And, more importantly, Will living this/that way give you your full and open heart resounding and resonating from the Infinite that you are?
“Anything is one of a million paths. Therefore you must always keep in mind that a path is only a path; if you feel you should not follow it, you must not stay with it under any conditions. To have such clarity you must lead a disciplined life. Only then will you know that any path is only a path and there is no affront, to oneself or to others, in dropping it if that is what your heart tells you to do. But your decision to keep on the path or to leave it must be free of fear or ambition. I warn you. Look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary.
...Does this path have a heart? All paths are the same: they lead nowhere. They are paths going through the bush, or into the bush. In my own life I could say I have traversed long long paths, but I am not anywhere. Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn't, it is of no use. Both paths lead nowhere; but one has a heart, the other doesn't. One makes for a joyful journey; as long as you follow it, you are one with it. The other will make you curse your life. One makes you strong; the other weakens you.
Before you embark on any path ask the question: Does this path have a heart?”
~ From The Teachings of Don Juan: a Yaqui Way of Knowledge, by Carlos Castaneda
Before you start another moment of another day, ask the question: “Is this deepening or stealing my heart?”
May your hearts deepen, strengthen, and be cherished by all that resonates, as the Infinite cherishes all that you are,
